Reflecting on Eid al-Adha: A Tale of Two Realities

As communities across the UK and the globe recently marked the conclusion of another blessed Eid al-Adha, families came together to fulfill the sacred tradition of the Qurbani sacrifice. It is a time traditionally defined by sharing abundant meals with loved ones, distributing fresh meat to those in need, and experiencing collective gratitude. However, a review of recent accounts from Gaza highlights a stark and painful contrast: while many had the privilege to complete their sacrifices with ease, millions in the Gaza Strip were entirely stripped of this vital ritual.

The Devastation of Gaza’s Livestock Sector

For the third consecutive year, families in Gaza have faced a holiday devoid of its most fundamental pillars. Due to ongoing conflict and severe restrictions on the movement of essential goods, more than 90 percent of Gaza’s livestock farms have been completely destroyed or damaged. Furthermore, the entry of live animals into the enclave remains blocked, resulting in an catastrophic shortage of sheep and cattle.

This severe scarcity has driven market prices to unthinkable heights. A single, weak 50-kilogram sacrificial sheep—which typically cost between $560 and $700 before the crisis—now commands exorbitant prices ranging from $4,400 to upwards of $6,000. For a population where families struggle to even afford a few kilograms of basic vegetables, participating in the traditional Qurbani sacrifice has become a financial impossibility.

Vanished Rituals and Persistent Hardship

The loss of the holiday spirit extends far beyond the absence of livestock. For three years, border closures have prevented thousands of registered Palestinian pilgrims from departing for the sacred Hajj pilgrimage. Simultaneously, hyperinflation and a lack of cash mean parents are unable to purchase new Eid clothes or provide small monetary gifts (eidya) to bring comfort to their children.

Instead of gathering around festive tables filled with traditional dishes, displaced families spent the holiday in crowded tents, standing in long aid queues just to secure basic sustenance. Local residents recount being forced to replace their sacred sacrifices with simple cans of processed meat or frozen alternatives just to provide a fraction of protein for their children.

How We Are Intervening to Restore Dignity

While the traditional atmosphere of Eid has largely vanished under the weight of these hardships, hope is kept alive through immediate humanitarian intervention. IF Charity is actively worked to bridge these devastating gaps and ensure that families in Gaza are not entirely forgotten during these blessed days.

  • Frozen Meat Distributions: To counter the total absence of affordable livestock, we distributed high-quality frozen meat packages directly to displaced and vulnerable households, ensuring families receive vital nutrition and a sense of Eid dignity.

  • Childhood Joy & Eid Clothing: We have delivered comprehensive Eid packages containing brand-new clothing and toys to children living in temporary camps, restoring small moments of normalcy and smiles.

  • Kindergarten & Community Activities: Our initiatives include organising educational holiday activities and festive breakfasts for young children, helping to preserve the cultural and spiritual heritage despite the surrounding crisis.

  • A Lifeline of Support: Your generosity serves as a direct bridge between our completed sacrifices and the urgent needs of those surviving in tents. By supporting these distributions, you provide physical relief, protein-rich nourishment, and a reminder to the people of Gaza that they are not facing these difficult times alone.
