Spotlight: Running Because We Can, Houria’s The Big Half Journey

On Sunday 6th September 2026, one of our young volunteers took on the famous The Big Half marathon, stepping up to push her personal limits for a vital cause. We are thrilled to highlight her incredible achievement, turning a major running milestone into a powerful show of solidarity and endurance.

Running with Purpose

Taking on a 21.1km half marathon is no small feat, especially for someone who only started running this year. Looking to challenge herself, improve her health, and find an escape from everyday life, Houria committed to a rigorous training journey. Yet, the true driving force behind her miles went far beyond personal fitness.

In Her Own Words

Houria shared a deeply moving reflection on what the journey meant to her, from the grueling summer training to crossing that emotional finish line:

“I ran the Big Half Marathon on the 6th September because I chose to. I had a starting line, a finish line, a route mapped out, water stations along the way, and the reassurance that I will eventually make it home. But for Palestinians, there hasn’t been a finish line. They run because they have to—from bombs, from destruction, from fear, and from the constant threat of losing everything they know and love.

I only started running this year, so when I signed up, I was a complete beginner. I wanted to challenge myself, get healthier, and find an escape from everyday life. At the beginning, 21.1km seemed almost impossible, but I was determined to see how far I could push myself.

Choosing a charity was the easiest part. I have always held Palestine very close to my heart, so there was never any doubt that IF Charity was who I wanted to support. Seeing the devastation Palestinians have endured has been heartbreaking. IF Charity provides shelter, food, water, safety, and medical aid, bringing hope in dire hardship. Raising money for them gave the Big Half a purpose far beyond simply completing a race.

Training during the summer heatwave took a lot of discipline, and there were exhausting days. On race day, the hot weather and pain made me want to stop at times, but giving up wasn’t an option. Seeing my family and friends cheering me on, and seeing people in the crowds waving the Palestinian flag, made it so special. Any temporary discomfort I felt was nothing compared to the daily suffering of Palestinians.

Crossing that finish line was one of the most emotional moments of the journey. From starting as a beginner this year to completing a half marathon—and exceeding my fundraising goal—it taught me that perseverance can take you much further than you think.

The race will never end till Palestine is Free.”

A Community Celebration

Her determination not only saw her cross the finish line of a grueling 13.1-mile course, but it also successfully smashed her fundraising targets to directly support IF Charity’s work on the ground.
