As winter continues in Gaza, the already difficult living conditions for its people is becoming increasingly unbearable. The ongoing conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands, forcing many families to live in makeshift tents with little protection against the cold, rain, and wind.

For these families, winter is not just a season – it is a battle for survival.

Recent reports paint a grim picture of life in Gaza’s temporary shelters. Heavy rainstorms have flooded tent encampments, washing away or damaging around 10,000 tents. These shelters, already inadequate for protection, now offer little to shield families from the harsh elements. Entire communities face the dual threats of exposure to the cold and worsening health conditions due to poor sanitation and flooding. For families with young children and the elderly, the risks are particularly severe.

December weather in Gaza brings cooler temperatures, with average lows dropping to about 10°C (very cold for those not accustomed to it). The region experiences frequent rain, accumulating around 81mm (3.19 inches) of precipitation during the month. While these conditions might seem mild compared to colder climates, even a light rainfall can create devastating consequences for those living in tents or damaged homes. Flooding, mud, and waterborne diseases become ever-present threats, compounding the struggles of daily life.

This winter, Palestinian Christians in Gaza also face unique challenges. As a small but steadfast minority, they work to preserve their traditions and celebrate Christmas amidst the harsh realities of displacement and poverty. Christmas in Gaza has always symbolised hope and resilience, but the current crisis overshadows the festive season. Families struggle to find warmth and sustenance, and their hardships dampen communal worship and celebrations. Still, their faith and spirit remain strong, a reminder of the resilience of Gaza’s people.

How You Can Make a Difference

For many families in Gaza, the generosity of others is their only hope for enduring this winter. Simple necessities such as warm clothing, blankets, and waterproof coverings for their shelters can make a profound difference.

Donating provides immediate relief and shows solidarity with those facing unimaginable hardships. And the ask of you is small:

  • £20 can provide warm clothing for a child, helping them stay healthy in the chilly weather.
  • £25 can supply a waterproof sheet to shield tents from rain and floods.
  • £30 can provide a warm blanket, offering comfort during the cold nights.

Your donations can transform lives, offering warmth and hope to families who have lost so much. The displaced in Gaza are not just numbers – they are parents trying to keep their children warm, elders seeking comfort in their final years, and communities holding on to their faith amidst adversity.

Your contribution can be a lifeline for families braving the cold. Learn more about our Winter Campaign.
