Gaza’s Recent Polio Vaccination Drive: A Critical Health Intervention Amidst Crisis
September 4, 2024
In September 2024, a large-scale polio vaccination campaign was launched in Gaza, marking a critical effort to combat the resurgence of a disease that had been eradicated in the region for over 25 years. Led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, in collaboration with local health authorities and various NGOs, the campaign aimed to vaccinate over 640,000 children under the age of ten across Gaza. This initiative came in response to the detection of polio in wastewater samples and confirmed cases in children earlier this year.
The Challenges of Vaccination in Conflict Zones
While crucial, the vaccination campaign faced significant logistical and operational challenges. Gaza’s infrastructure has been severely damaged due to ongoing conflict, leading to difficulties in storing and transporting vaccines, which require strict cold chain management to remain effective. Damaged roads, limited electricity, and a shortage of refrigeration equipment have further complicated the situation.
Additionally, the campaign was launched amid active conflict, requiring “humanitarian pauses”—temporary cessations of hostilities—to allow health workers to administer the vaccines safely. These pauses have been crucial yet inconsistent, making it challenging to reach all targeted children. The WHO emphasised that achieving high vaccination coverage is essential to prevent an outbreak, but sustained peace is necessary to facilitate comprehensive healthcare delivery.
The Impact and Next Steps
Despite the challenges, the campaign has made substantial progress. In the first few days, thousands of children received their initial doses of the oral polio vaccine. Health officials reported vaccinating over 87,000 children in central Gaza alone on the campaign’s first day, with more efforts planned to extend vaccination to the northern and southern regions of Gaza.
The polio vaccination campaign underscores the urgent need for consistent humanitarian access and a long-term ceasefire to protect Gaza’s children from preventable diseases. Moving forward, additional rounds of vaccinations are planned to ensure all children receive the required doses, but this will depend on the ability to maintain or extend humanitarian pauses.
