Gaza’s Growing Hunger Crisis
May 31, 2024
The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming levels, with hunger becoming an increasingly severe threat to the well-being of its youngest residents. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 80% of children under five in Gaza did not eat for an entire day at least once in the three days preceding a recent food insecurity survey. This stark statistic highlights the urgent need for immediate intervention to prevent widespread malnutrition and hunger.
A Grim Snapshot of Hunger in Gaza
The situation for children in Gaza is dire. WHO spokesperson Dr. Margaret Harris has reported that many children under five are not receiving sufficient food, indicating a critical shortage of necessities. “These are children under five who are not getting food all day,” said Dr. Harris. “Children are starving.”
Further data from the survey shows that nearly all children in Gaza now consume only two different food groups per day, whereas the WHO recommends at least five for a balanced diet. This lack of dietary diversity directly results from the severe food shortages caused by the ongoing blockade and conflict, which restricts access to vital food supplies.
The Alarming Rise of Malnutrition
Since mid-January, more than 93,400 children under five in Gaza have been screened for malnutrition. Of these, 7,280 were diagnosed with acute malnutrition, including 5,604 with moderate acute malnutrition and 1,676 with severe acute malnutrition. These figures reflect a sharp rise in malnutrition rates, driven by a lack of access to adequate food and medical care.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has also raised concerns about the increasing risk of deadly malnutrition and famine among Gaza’s most vulnerable populations. “They are certainly not getting the amount that they desperately need to prevent a famine, to prevent all kinds of horrors that we see,” said Jens Laerke, OCHA spokesperson.
Barriers to Aid and the Need for Safe Access
Access to humanitarian aid remains a significant challenge. The destruction of infrastructure and ongoing conflict have made it incredibly difficult to deliver aid to those who need it most. Despite some aid getting through, it often does not reach the people in desperate need due to these barriers.
OCHA has emphasized the need for safe land crossings to facilitate aid delivery on a large scale. “We need more of these land crossings open, and we need them safe to pick up the aid when it’s dropped off,” said Laerke.
