The Night Journey (Isra and Miraj)
January 23, 2025

The Night Journey, known as Isra and Miraj, is one of Islamic history’s most profound and spiritually significant events. It marks the miraculous journey of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the heavens in a single night.
Celebrated by Muslims worldwide, it reminds them of faith, devotion, and Allah’s infinite power.
In 2025, Isra and Miraj will be observed on the night of 26th January, corresponding to the 27th night of Rajab in the Islamic calendar (depending on moon sightings).
What is Isra and Miraj?
Isra and Miraj is a two-part journey that is deeply rooted in the Quran and Hadith:
- Isra – The Night Journey to Al-AqsaThe Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was transported from the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem in a miraculous journey facilitated by the angel Jibreel (Gabriel). This part of the journey, described in Surah Al-Isra (17:1), highlights Masjid Al-Aqsa’s sanctity, the third holiest site in Islam.
- Miraj – The Ascension to the HeavensFrom Al-Aqsa, the Prophet (pbuh) ascended through the seven heavens, meeting prophets such as Adam, Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and Isa (Jesus), before reaching the Divine Presence of Allah. It was during this ascension that the obligation of five daily prayers (Salah) was established as a gift to the Muslim Ummah.
Why is Isra and Miraj important?
- A Test of Faith – The miraculous nature of the journey tested the faith of the early Muslims. While some doubted the event, Abu Bakr (RA) immediately affirmed it, earning him the title of As-Siddiq (the Truthful). It reminds believers to trust in Allah’s power, even when faced with challenges or disbelief from others.
- The Establishment of Salah – Salah, the five daily prayers, was revealed during this journey, emphasising its importance as the pillar of faith and a direct link between the believer and Allah.
- Symbol of Hope and Resilience – Isra and Miraj occurred during a time of personal sorrow for the Prophet (pbuh) – known as the Year of Sorrow – when he lost his beloved wife Khadijah, and his uncle Abu Talib. This miracle journey was a source of hope and comfort, demonstrating that Allah’s mercy and support are always near.
- Honouring Masjid Al-Aqsa – The journey highlights the sacred status of Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, reminding Muslims of its historical and spiritual importance and their duty to honour and protect it.
