International Day of Persons with Disabilities: A Focus on Gaza
December 2, 2024
On December 3rd of each year, the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Marking the occasion, we turn our attention to Gaza, where people with disabilities face numerous challenges, all of which have been intensified by ongoing conflict. The recent escalation has not only increased the number of people living with disabilities but has also intensified the hardships they endure daily.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, as of December 2023, approximately 58,000 individuals with disabilities reside in Gaza, representing 2.6% of the population. However, the recent conflict has likely pushed this number higher, as many civilians have suffered injuries resulting in permanent disabilities. The impact of conflict is pervasive, altering lives irreversibly and creating new vulnerabilities among an already at-risk population.
Individuals with disabilities in Gaza confront numerous obstacles. Limited access to healthcare is a significant challenge, as the strained healthcare system struggles to provide adequate medical attention, rehabilitation, and assistive devices. Economic hardship further compounds their difficulties, with high unemployment rates leaving many with disabilities dependent on aid. Social isolation is another issue, driven by stigma and a lack of accessible infrastructure, which often excludes people with disabilities from community life. Children with disabilities face unique challenges, as educational barriers—such as inadequate facilities and resources—limit their opportunities for personal development.
The recent conflict has worsened these challenges. The escalation of violence has resulted in numerous injuries, many leading to lifelong disabilities. The United Nations has expressed alarm over the dire conditions faced by persons with disabilities in Gaza, emphasising the lack of protection and increased risks they face during conflicts. Infrastructure damage has disrupted essential services, including healthcare and rehabilitation centres, further limiting support. Additionally, evacuation orders during attacks frequently disregard the needs of persons with disabilities, leaving them at heightened risk of injury or death.
IF Charity is committed to supporting individuals with disabilities in Gaza by providing medical aid, offering economic support through vocational training and employment opportunities, and promoting advocacy and awareness for their rights and inclusion. Our efforts aim to address the immediate and long-term needs of persons with disabilities, empowering them to live with dignity and purpose.
